What is the maximum span for steel grating?

Quick answer

There is no fixed maximum — it depends on the bearing bar and the load. Deep bars (75–100 mm) can span 2 m or more at moderate loads, while shallow bars are limited to under a metre. Beyond about 2 m, deflection usually governs and a deeper bar or intermediate support is needed.

For walkways the practical limit is often set by deflection (a span/200 feel-good limit) rather than strength, so longer spans call for deeper bars even when stress is acceptable. Adding an intermediate support beam is frequently cheaper than a much deeper bar.

Tell us the span and load and we will pick a bar that satisfies both strength and deflection, or advise where an extra support makes the panel lighter and cheaper.
