How do I read a grating load table?

Quick answer

Find your clear span (column) and your design load (kPa or psf), then pick a bearing bar whose capacity at that span meets or beats the load (row). Check that deflection is within a span/200 guide. See our full load tables for worked values.

Load tables list bearing-bar sizes down the side and clear spans across the top; each cell is the maximum uniform load that bar carries at that span. Move along your span column until the value equals or exceeds your design load, then read off the bar size.

Remember the values assume a uniform load and simple supports — concentrated loads, vehicle wheels or fixed ends need separate checks. Always confirm against your governing standard such as ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531.
