Grating Span, Support and Bearing Direction
Most grating selection errors begin with an incorrect span or a panel rotated relative to its load-carrying direction.
Measure the clear distance between effective supports and show the bearing direction on both the drawing and panel schedule.
Clear span is not panel length
The clear span is the unsupported distance the load-carrying members bridge. Panel length includes bearing at each end and any project clearance. Using the opening size, support centerline distance or outside frame dimension as the span without checking the detail can select the wrong load-table row.
Identify the load-carrying direction
In metal bar grating, the bearing bars carry the primary load between supports while cross bars maintain spacing and distribute local effects. Pultruded FRP is also directional. Molded FRP may provide two-way action, but capacity and support still follow the product data and approved design.
- Show an arrow for bearing direction on plan drawings.
- Coordinate long panel dimension with the bearing direction; do not assume they are always identical.
- Check every field-cut panel and corner piece separately.
Support and panel joints
Support width, edge distance, seating condition and attachment all affect installation. Panel joints should occur where the approved layout provides support. Unexpected gaps, warped frames or missing support steel are design queries, not conditions to solve with loose packing or an unapproved longer panel.
Information to put on the schedule
Record panel mark, finished size, material, bearing-bar or product designation, surface, bearing direction, support detail, fixing type, openings and removable zones. This connects fabrication, site installation and future replacement.
