Walkway, Platform, Opening and Cover Requirements

Grating is one component of an access system. Surface capacity, restraint, openings, guardrails, toe protection and inspection must be considered together.

Decision first

Determine the jurisdiction and application first; OSHA workplace rules and ISO machinery-access standards have different scopes.

OSHA general-industry duties

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22 requires walking-working surfaces to support the maximum intended load, remain free of recognized hazards, and be inspected regularly and as necessary. Conditions affecting structural integrity must be corrected or supervised by a qualified person.

Openings and covers

Under OSHA 1910.29, a cover for a hole in a walking-working surface must support at least twice the maximum intended load that may be imposed at one time and must be secured against accidental displacement. OSHA 1910.28 addresses fall-protection duties around holes and openings. These provisions do not by themselves select a grating panel; the project design must establish the full system.

  • Identify whether an opening is access, drainage, process or a protected floor hole.
  • Coordinate removable covers with securement and access procedures.
  • Assess falling-object protection, including toe protection where applicable.

ISO 14122-2 scope

ISO 14122-2:2016 covers non-powered working platforms and walkways that are part of stationary machinery and can also apply in certain related access situations described by the standard. Its scope should not be presented as a universal building-code substitute.

Specification checkpoint

Record jurisdiction, occupancy or machinery scope, design loads, slip-resistance requirement, opening limits, guardrail and toe-board interfaces, drainage, access and inspection responsibility. Obtain review by the responsible engineer and safety authority.
