Standards & compliance
Hot-Dip Galvanizing Standards for Grating
Fabricated grating, centrifuged hardware and field repair are related galvanizing topics, but they are not governed by one interchangeable document.
Specify the standard by component: fabricated grating, hardware and repair material each need the correct scope.
Fabricated steel products
ASTM A123/A123M covers zinc coatings applied by the hot-dip process to iron and steel products including fabricated products, plates and bars. The applicable coating requirements depend on the material category and thickness; acceptance should follow the purchased edition and agreed inspection plan.
Hardware and fasteners
ASTM A153/A153M addresses hot-dip zinc coatings on iron and steel hardware that is centrifuged or otherwise handled to remove excess zinc. Do not cite A123 automatically for every bolt, clip or threaded item.
Damaged or uncoated areas
ASTM A780/A780M describes repair methods for damaged or uncoated areas of hot-dip galvanized coatings. It covers zinc-based solders, zinc-rich paint and sprayed zinc. The permitted repair area, preparation, coating thickness and chosen method must follow the governing specification and agreement between parties.
- Record damage before repair.
- Use a qualified procedure and compatible material.
- Inspect and document the completed repair.
Procurement wording
State the fabricated-product galvanizing standard, the hardware coating requirement, repair practice, inspection records and any appearance criteria separately. A visual color difference alone is not a complete acceptance test.
