Grating Inspection Checklist

A checklist makes inspections repeatable, but the person performing it must still recognize when a condition requires engineering or safety escalation.

Decision first

If a panel rocks, support is missing, an opening is unprotected or structural damage is suspected, restrict access and escalate immediately.

Before the walkdown

Review the panel layout, previous inspection, known repairs, load changes and recent events. Define safe access, required PPE and how defects will be photographed and located.

  • Drawing and panel identification available
  • Area isolated where necessary
  • Previous open items reviewed
  • Inspection tools and reporting method ready

Panels, supports and restraint

Check every accessible panel for seating, rocking, distortion, cracks, broken bearing members, impact damage and unexpected field cuts. Examine support steel or frames for loss, deformation or debris that prevents seating. Verify clips, bolts and welds against the approved detail.

  • No missing or displaced panels
  • Bearing direction and joints remain as designed
  • Fasteners present and engaged
  • Supports continuous at planned bearing locations

Surface, openings and environment

Look for sharp edges, trip points, loss of slip-resistant surface, corrosion, exposed FRP fibers, chemical attack, blocked drainage, standing water and accumulated debris. Confirm removable covers are secured and surrounding fall- and falling-object protection remains effective.

Close-out

Classify the condition, restrict access where needed, assign the responsible reviewer, and record repair evidence. OSHA requires hazardous conditions to be corrected before reuse or guarded until correction; structural-integrity work requires a qualified person.
