Galvanized Grating Damage and Repair Guide

A stain, wet-storage mark, bare steel and section loss are different conditions. Diagnose the defect before selecting a repair product.

Decision first

Structural loss, cracking, distortion or uncertain capacity requires engineering assessment; coating touch-up alone is not a structural repair.

Triage the condition

Record location, area, likely cause, moisture or chemical exposure, and whether steel is exposed. Clean only with methods compatible with the galvanized surface. If corrosion has reduced the section or damaged a connection, isolate the area and obtain structural review.

  • Appearance or deposit only
  • Localized coating damage with sound steel
  • Active corrosion or repeated wetting
  • Section loss, crack, distortion or connection damage

ASTM A780 repair scope

ASTM A780/A780M describes three repair-material families: zinc-based solder, zinc-rich paint and sprayed zinc. Surface preparation, material, thickness, permitted area and inspection must follow the governing edition and purchase specification. The contracting parties may need to agree on the repair method and extent.

  • Document the unrepaired condition.
  • Confirm repair limits and method.
  • Prepare the surface as specified.
  • Verify coating and record close-out.

Prevent recurrence

Investigate drainage, trapped debris, dissimilar-metal contact, handling damage, chemical exposure and repeat abrasion. A technically correct touch-up will not solve the problem if the exposure mechanism remains.

Replacement threshold

Replace or engineer a repair when the panel, support or connection can no longer be demonstrated to meet the intended load and service requirements. Do not use coating appearance as the only structural acceptance criterion.
