FRP Grating Inspection and Maintenance
FRP avoids steel rust, but it is not maintenance-free. Wear, impact, ultraviolet exposure, chemicals, heat and poor installation can create service problems.
Use the product manufacturer's inspection and repair criteria; resin color or surface appearance alone cannot establish structural capacity.
Inspect the whole assembly
Check panels, supports, clips, edges, penetrations, joints and adjacent steelwork. Look for rocking, unusual deflection, loose fasteners, worn grit, exposed fibers, cracks, delamination, crushed areas, impact marks and unsealed field cuts.
- Compare with baseline photos or prior records.
- Map defects to panel marks.
- Record chemical spills, fire or hot-work exposure.
- Restrict access if damage may affect safe use.
Cleaning and surface care
Select cleaning methods compatible with the resin and anti-slip surface. Avoid assuming that a cleaner safe for steel or concrete is safe for FRP. Remove debris that blocks drainage or hides fasteners, then inspect the cleaned surface again.
Repair or replacement
Small surface work may be possible under a manufacturer-approved procedure. Damage to load-carrying bars, widespread delamination, heat damage, chemical attack or uncertain support conditions requires review by the product manufacturer or qualified engineer. Do not drill extra holes or add improvised clips as a repair.
Maintenance records
Keep the product designation, resin system, installation drawing, load data and manufacturer instructions with the asset record. These details are essential when replacement panels or repair materials are sourced years later.
