Installation
Steel Grating Installation Guide
A safe installation starts with the approved panel plan and support geometry. Do not use nominal panel size or a catalogue load table as permission to install.
Stop work when the support layout, clear span, bearing-bar direction or fixing detail differs from the approved drawing.
1. Review the installation inputs
Match every panel mark to the approved shop drawing. Confirm the design load, clear span, support material, minimum bearing, panel orientation, cutout details, edge banding and fixing schedule. Record any site dimension that differs from the drawing before panels are altered.
- Approved panel layout and panel marks
- Support elevations, level and clear span
- Bearing-bar direction and panel seat
- Specified finish and fastener material
- Openings, removable zones and access requirements
2. Inspect supports and place panels
Clean the bearing surface and remove obstructions that prevent full seating. The load-carrying bearing bars must span between supports; cross bars are not a substitute for the designed bearing direction. Lower panels into position without dropping them or dragging finished surfaces across sharp edges.
- Keep panel joints aligned with the support plan.
- Maintain the project-specified clearance around fixed steelwork and penetrations.
- Do not bridge an unexpected opening with an unapproved offcut.
3. Restrain the panels
Use the connection type shown on the approved detail. Removable clip systems support access and replacement; welded attachment may be specified where permanent restraint is required. Clip count, spacing, weld size and substrate capacity are project decisions—not universal catalogue values.
- Tighten bolted clips to the fastener or project specification, not by feel.
- Avoid dissimilar-metal combinations unless the corrosion detail addresses them.
- After hot work, inspect coating damage and apply the specified repair system where permitted.
4. Treat cuts, openings and edges
Field changes can alter load paths and create trip or falling-object hazards. Obtain approval before cutting load-carrying bars. Openings normally require a defined support and banding detail; toe plates or additional protection may be required where objects could fall to a lower level.
- Deburr sharp edges.
- Restore the specified corrosion-protection system.
- Secure covers against accidental displacement where they protect floor holes.
5. Handover inspection
Verify that panels are seated, restrained and free of rocking; joints and openings match the drawing; damaged coatings are recorded; and temporary protection has been removed. OSHA requires walking-working surfaces to support the maximum intended load and to be inspected and maintained in a safe condition.
