Installation
Grating Clips and Fasteners: Selection Guide
A clip is part of the restraint system, not a generic accessory. The correct choice depends on both the panel and the supporting structure.
Specify the fastener system on the drawing; do not leave clip type, material or quantity to an uncontrolled site substitution.
Start with the restraint requirement
Define whether the panel must be removable, whether underside access exists, and whether vibration, uplift, vehicle action or frequent maintenance is expected. The structural designer should determine the required restraint and connection capacity.
- Removable access favors bolted clip systems.
- Permanent welded attachment may be specified for steel grating, subject to coating repair and site rules.
- FRP requires product-compatible clips and tightening practice.
Match materials to the environment
Fastener material should be compatible with the panel, support and exposure. Water traps and dissimilar-metal contact can create localized corrosion. For galvanized steel assemblies, distinguish the coating standard for fabricated steel from the standard that may apply to centrifuged hardware.
| Input | Decision to record |
|---|---|
| Panel | Steel, stainless, aluminum, molded FRP or pultruded FRP |
| Support | Steel angle, channel, concrete frame or other approved substrate |
| Access | Top-only, underside available, or removable zone |
| Exposure | Indoor, weather, marine, chemical or washdown |
| Action | Pedestrian, vibration, uplift or vehicle-related load case |
Installation and inspection controls
Use the drawing location and specified torque or installation procedure. Confirm that the clip bears on the intended part of the grating and support, not on an unsupported cross bar or damaged edge. Include clips in handover and maintenance inspections because missing or loose restraint is a service condition that must be corrected.
