Carbon Steel vs Stainless Steel Grating
Carbon steel needs a defined bare, painted or galvanized finish for its environment; stainless performance depends on selecting and fabricating the correct alloy.
State both the base-metal grade and surface condition. 'Steel' and 'stainless' are incomplete purchase descriptions.

Choose Carbon steel when
- The load and exposure suit a documented carbon-steel system.
- The required protective finish is available and inspectable.
- Project maintenance can address coating damage.
All conditions still need confirmation against the exact panel, support, load case and governing specification.
Choose Stainless steel when
- A verified stainless grade suits the actual environment.
- Hygiene, appearance or coating avoidance is required.
- Fabrication and cleaning controls are included.
Ask the supplier to identify any qualification, exception or missing evidence before treating the option as equivalent.
Inputs required for a defensible comparison
A quotation cannot resolve the choice unless both suppliers receive the same technical basis. Include the following in the RFQ and record assumptions explicitly.
- Base grade and surface finish
- Exposure and cleaning chemicals
- Welding and contamination controls
- Dissimilar metals, drainage and crevices
- Order-specific material and inspection records
