What is steel grating?
Steel grating is an open-grid metal flooring made of load-bearing bars joined by perpendicular cross bars. It is strong, drains freely, lets light and air pass, is self-cleaning and slip-resistant — used for platforms, walkways, stair treads and drainage covers.
The load-bearing bars (set on edge) carry the weight, while the cross bars hold them at a fixed spacing and give lateral stability. Because most of the panel is open space, grating sheds water, snow, dust and debris instead of trapping them — a key reason it replaces solid plate on industrial walkways and platforms.
Steel grating is specified by bearing-bar size, bar spacing (pitch), panel dimensions and finish (usually hot-dip galvanized). It is made to order rather than sold as fixed stock, so the bar size is matched to the span and load of each project.
