What is bar grating?

Quick answer

Bar grating is the most common steel grating, named for its rectangular load-bearing bars set on edge. Cross bars lock them into a rigid panel. It is specified by bar size, spacing and panel dimensions and made to project requirements.

"Bar grating" and "steel grating" are often used interchangeably. The term emphasises the flat rectangular bearing bars (for example 25×3 mm or 40×5 mm) that do the structural work, as opposed to round-rod or expanded-metal products.

Bar grating comes in welded, press-locked, swage-locked and riveted constructions, and in carbon steel, stainless or aluminium. The welded carbon-steel, hot-dip galvanized version is the workhorse for industrial platforms and walkways.
