What are the types of steel grating?

Quick answer

The main types are welded bar grating (cross bars resistance-welded on — strongest, most economical), press-locked (cross bars pressed in without welding — architectural), swage-locked (cross bars cold-swaged in — common for aluminium) and riveted (high lateral rigidity).

Welded grating is forge-welded at every cross intersection, giving the best strength and value, and dominates industrial use. Press-locked grating mechanically presses the cross bars into notched bearing bars for a clean weld-free look used architecturally.

Swage-locked grating cold-forms the cross bars into the bearing bars without heat — ideal for aluminium where welding is undesirable — and riveted grating uses reticulated cross bars riveted on for high lateral rigidity in heavy, high-vibration service.
