What do W19, W11 and other grating codes mean?

Quick answer

The numbers describe spacing: the bearing-bar pitch and cross-bar pitch in a manufacturer or standard code. For example W-19 means bearing bars on about 19 mm-equivalent centres. Always confirm the exact pitch in millimetres or inches with the supplier.

In the common North American system the letter (W, SL, DT) denotes construction and the numbers denote bearing-bar and cross-bar spacing in sixteenths of an inch — so 19 ≈ 1-3/16″ bearing-bar centres and 4 ≈ 1/4″... cross-bar centres. Conventions vary between makers and standards.

Because the codes are not universal, the safest practice for an export project is to specify spacing directly in millimetres (or inches) plus bar size, rather than relying on a letter code alone.
